CE conformity

In the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, machinery and other products must meet the requirements specified in the European directives and regulations. On this page, we will explain how Suva can support you on your journey to CE conformity.

Content

Short and succinct

Suva supports manufacturers and operators of machinery, systems and other products with matters surrounding CE conformity, performs type-examinations and offers specialist courses.

The basic safety requirements for machinery are set out in the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC . This will be replaced by the European Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230  with effect from 20 January 2027.

Draw on our many years of experience in the field of product safety.

Your journey to CE conformity

Whatever the nature of your product, the journey to CE conformity can normally be broken down into six steps.

From a technological perspective, the following provisions apply: the Federal Act on Product Safety (ProdSA) and the Ordinance on Machine Safety (MachineO), which refers to the European Machinery Directive. Further provisions may also need to be considered.

The Machinery Directive  requires a risk assessment, risk reduction process and adherence to the harmonized standards.

The specifications for this are laid out in Annex VII of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC . These documents must contain the information necessary to assess whether the machinery meets the requirements specified in the Directive.

The conformity assessment indicates whether all relevant provisions of Article 12 and Annex VIII-X of the Machinery Directive have been complied with.

This declaration confirms that the product complies with the relevant provisions. The content of the declaration of conformity is defined in Annex II of the Machinery Directive .

The CE marking acts as the manufacturer’s confirmation that the machinery and systems meet the requirements of the European directives. This entitles the manufacturer and retailers to sell the product in the EU and EEA.
